Safuu Racing’s BTCC Adventure Gets Underway!

Donington Park was the setting for Safuu Racing’s debut in the British Touring Car Championship and after a pulsating weekend of action, the future looks bright! Not only is the future looking bright, but the Safuu Racing teamwear was certainly bright enough to be chief attention grabber within the paddock. Fans and the team were wearing the colours with pride and certainly stood out from the crowd which is sometimes a difficult thing to do within the BTCC. A strong brand of course needs to go hand in hand with a strong performance and the new hybrid era was threatening to throw uncertainty into an already unpredictable spectacle.
However, after a tricky couple of practice sessions the guys and girls at Team Hard managed to set both Aron Taylor-Smith and Nicolas Hamilton on their way with cars that are capable of some great times and more importantly being able to compete at the highest level.
Nicolas Hamilton came out of Qualifying relatively pleased with his performance considering he and the team had not had a lot of testing time on track and due to the fact the Nicolas didn’t actually think he would be driving within the BTCC just 6 weeks ago.

Nicolas Hamilton, #28, said:

“Qualifying went well, I finished the session with my best ever lap here so I’m happy with that, but we are working on things like brakes just to help my legs, as physically it is quite demanding at the moment. When braking late the pedal is a bit long so we just need to fix that, and I think we will make some improvements in lap time”
Árón Taylor-Smith, #40, said:

“We have had the same part within the car fail multiple times during pre-season, the car as a whole feels really good and we should have been inside the top 10 today but for this consistent error. Let’s hope they can sort this frequent part failure soon. I can’t fault the team, they have been great as always, let’s push on tomorrow and score some points.”
Race Day
You can almost feel the nerves jangling up and down the paddock on the morning of race day. It is an excruciatingly long wait for the first round to begin, but the sight of the Safuu Racing cars primed and ready to go around midday was a proud moment for the entire team as it marked the official start of an exciting new venture!
Aron Taylor Smith flew out of the traps, almost felt like all the missing pieces had come together with the car and he made up ground in no time. Aron finished with a P13 after starting in P22 and Nic also made up plenty of ground finishing P19 after starting in P24. The British Touring Car Championship leaves you little time to breathe on a race day, as the fans finally got their chance to obtain signatures and meet the drivers as the ‘Pit Lane Walkabout’ made a long awaited return. Race two saw yet more progress for Aron, and due to some very close quarter racing we even managed to ensure that the Safuu Racing livery was given some fantastic screen time. Correcting a slide may have not been ideal for the Irish starlet, but it sure did look fantastic for the photographers and the ITV cameras! Nic had a difficult second race by his own admission finishing with a P23 and Aron made up two more places with a P11.
The third and final race seemed to come round quick, and there were some teams limping towards the end of a gruelling first weekend of Hybrid racing. Aron managed to hold strong for another P11 finish, meaning he achieved three solid points finishes. Nic finished in P24 and we managed to catch up with both drivers at the end of an enthralling weekend of racing.
Nicolas Hamilton, #28, said:

“The team have done a fantastic job with our cars, hybrid has run faultlessly all weekend so credit to the boys and girls at Team HARD. I’m going to be analysing what I can do better personally between now and Brands Hatch as we work towards that top 15 spot because I really do think it’s possible this year.”
Árón Taylor-Smith, #40, said:

“I think today finally showed what the CUPRA is now capable of. Last year we had to figure out bits and bobs on it but now I feel like we have the right team behind us and what Tony, Sam, Jamie and everyone has done has transformed us from a team that was fighting to just get within the points to a team that can challenge at the front.”
Safuu Racing now plough onto Brands Hatch after a really positive start to the Championship. 3 weeks to pause for breath and then we go again!
